Soch ’21: Think About The One Lesson

In earlier posts, we introduced Prabandhan ’21, the flagship management conclave of IIT Kanpur, where From The Experts’ Mouth (FTEM) is the Digital Media Partner and Soch ’21, the article writing competition with FTEM as the Event Partner. Soch ’21 has been conceptualized around the theme of The One Thought and there are five topics within this theme. We did throw light on the theme of The One Idea in the previous post. This time, let us turn our attention to the next theme, The One Lesson, where we can turn the tables on the education system.

You have the opportunity to impart the lesson of your choice to the education system through your submission to the contest! Not only do you have the opportunity to express your views and gain a shot at winning prizes, but you also have the potential to get published and be heard and make a difference to the education system, something that you have always yearned to do. Soch ’21 is giving us that opportunity to extricate ourselves from our mundane routine and pen down our thoughts and impart The One Lesson from our experience.

What is The One Lesson for the Education System?

The New Education Policy (NEP 2020) has suggested a bold new direction for the education system. But, what is the change that you want to bring about, or at least, write about? Here are some prompts and macro themes to help you think about The One Lesson for the Education System, that could make it far more relevant to the Next Normal. Needless to mention, you can make your submission to Soch ’21 based on thoughts triggered by one or more of these themes, or anything else that fits in within the context of The One Lesson.

#Leveraging Ed-Tech

The pandemic has brought ‘Educational Technology’, commonly known as Ed-Tech, to the forefront. Even the most remote parts of the country have become used to dispensing educational lessons using technology. However, you may have thoughts about the proper usage of technology and there may be valuable lessons for the education system on leveraging and adopting ed-tech in the mainstream education. Can you share your perspective by penning it down in form of an article?

For instance, how can Virtual Reality / Augmented Reality (VR/AR) transform the experience of educators and students and enrich the learning experience? What are the cutting-edge technologies of the last decade that are yet to find applications in the education segment? How can we use Artificial Intelligence to supplement the stupendous efforts put in by our teachers? Can education be transformed from an industrialized system to a personalized system at scale?

#Bridging The Gap Between Academic and Real World

The gulf between academia and the industry has always been discernible. However, this gap has increased significantly over the last decade. And, there are no prizes for guessing that this gap will exponentially increase unless we do something drastic about the education system. So, do you have thoughts about The One Lesson to bridge this glaring gap?

How can the education system impart real-world skills? How can we move away from rote learning to experiential learning? What are the skills of tomorrow and what is The One Lesson that we can give to the system to prepare our future generation better for the Next Normal?

#Value Based Education

The education system has diverged significantly from our traditional education system. One of the casualties of this divergence is value-based education. In a bid to prepare students for the competitive examinations, critical inputs that are vital to make us better citizens and holistic humans have been de-prioritized. What is The One Lesson that you can impart to the education system to help us make the best version of ourselves, in the broadest possible sense?

How can we go back to our roots and be proud of our heritage and culture, while still staying abreast of technology and other attributes of the modern world? Do you have The One Lesson that can go beyond helping us crack the competitive exams and help us from cracking up in the examination of life? How can we inculcate in our youth the values and qualities, such as compassion and empathy, that we all want to see in the world?

#Nurturing Creativity, Not Killing It

It is not fair to trap the creative minds of children in the prison of traditional learning. Since childhood, we are nudged to excel in Science and Mathematics so that we can become a doctor or an engineer by profession, but is it fair? Children of today develop an inclination towards creative activities like singing, dancing, painting, cooking, and others and some become so passionate that they want to even turn it into their profession. However, our education system doesn’t really make the path easy and natural. Do you have The One Lesson to make a visible difference in their lives?

How can we bring equilibrium across various disciplines of education? How can professions and education streams that have traditionally been dominated by the left brain become more creative? How can we migrate children from providing the ‘right’ answers verbatim to asking the right question, as we head into the unchartered territories of the Next Normal?

#Remote Schooling

The shift from in-person schooling to distance learning has taken a toll on the mental health of children across continents. While these innocent minds are having to deal with tremendous uncertainty about their future, and are under a constant state of fear and agony, parents are at their wits’ end on how to help their ward. Can you think of The One Lesson that can help children navigate through these turbulent times with ease and improve their mental wellbeing?

Do we need to reinvent the traditional concept of a classroom and that of a university? Can the education system be better integrated with other facets of society, such as industry? How can we protect the mental health of our youth, as we grapple with the hitherto unknown challenges of remote education?
