The Moon and Me

Moon and Me - Poem by Sheo Rama

Human beings would’ve stripped the Earth of it’s resources long ago if it wasn’t for the self-balancing nature of our ecosystem. The poem is a hypothetical conversation between me (a human) and the moon – a distant spectator of destruction and repair cycle on Earth.

THE MOON AND ME

It was a chilly night
The winter was on spree
We had a talk
The moon and me.

I poised him the question
How old you are
He answered with a glee
Pointing to a tree afar.

The rivers, the mountains, trees and fountains
I’ve seen them form,
I’ve seen them mourn
Saying this a tear rolled by, down beneath the moon’s glistening eye.

Why did they mourn, I asked
Hearing this, the moon laughed
Being a human, you shouldn’t ask this question
Coz I assume, you too have done your portion.

Inch by inch the planet keeps wailing
While humans keep their selfish boat sailing
Burning forests, dying rivers, dug up earth, all crying with shiver
I’ve seen them all, I’ve seen them fall

With grief in eyes, the moon went on
The planet was happy, when the humans were born
It had someone to talk to, someone with not just brawn
Ages went by in peace and elation, till the humans began the process of annihilation

Bit by bit, the planet was set on fire
Left to die by humans’ evil desire
Lost in growth, money and assets
The humans forgot an important facet

The earth and humans are but one creature
With different forms but similar feature
What is sown, shall surely be reaped
And thus began earth’s destructive feat

Nature knows how to balance
Hook, crook or by menace
Slowly now the humans have realized
And are showing concerns undisguised

What happened in ages
Can’t be quickly undone
More habitats will die, many species will be gone
Ere the earth re-establishes it’s footing, and the humans would no more be nuking.

So now you know what all I’ve witnessed
Said the moon with utter sweetness
Yes, age is just a number my friend
It’s how much you’ve learned, how much are you spent.

The narration made me wake with fear
Out of my dream, very unclear
I saw the moon’s light shining over the wall
Smiled and murmured, he’s seen them all, he’s seen them fall.
