Vanity Of A Stone

Vanity Of A Stone, Gauri Wadehra, FTEM - From The Experts Mouth

Vanity Of A Stone – Poet’s Note:

This is a metaphorical poem. The ‘Vanity Of A Stone’ illustrates the haughtiness of a person. Extreme vanity hurts a person by spoiling his personality and nature. It also affects the others around him. The message here is that one should stay clear of vanity. Gratitude and humility are the virtues to be adopted rather than vanity.

I walk, on and on,
To find a stone,
As huge as a watermelon,
Besides dandelions standing alone.

I thought it was nice,
Just like a smiley!
Adding up to the spice,
Hard to hit and jolly.

That’s when I realized,
It was but smile of a freak,
Who stood by and tortured,
Every passerby, mighty or meek!

Now there came a millionaire,
Smart and rich.
The stone winked full of vanity,
Itching to entrap him, like a witch.

On it went with its chatter -
Go on and with your shoe,
O Millionaire! I challenge you,
To hit me, bruise or batter.

Your feet will hurt.
For if you hit,
You'll trip.
So around me you've got to skirt!

He laughed and laughed,
A mighty laugh,
A haughty laugh,
On and on he laughed.

Many a wealthy feet he broke,
Many a legs would moan.
About him all gentlemen spoke,
Haunted road of the stone!

He owned a crown of terror.
He was high, full of strength,
No one could be stronger!
Of that he would boast at length.

Then a common man shone.
With a fierce fire of anger,
He threw the stone.
And the stone was a shatter!

Now hit by many,
Seen crying for his nanny!
All that was left of the crown,
Were - shards in Frown!
