My Experiments With Books

My Experiments With Books - Mayank Agarwal - FTEM (From The Experts Mouth)

Books – A Companion For Life

Man is a social animal, but sometimes inanimate objects can fill social voids too. For instance, books can not only become the most interesting companions, but can also propel our journey, personally and professionally. Let us join Mayank Agarwal as he talks about his Experiments With Books.

Experiments With Books

No journey of life seems interesting when travelled alone. Life is indeed more fun with more people around us – people we can share our experiences with. We all belong to a family, where we have our parents, siblings, cousins, grandparents, great grandparents, uncles, aunts, etc. We get immense love and affection from them. However, our entire life does not circulate around our family members only. We all have a life outside our family. We tend to make good friends outside our family boundaries and that makes our journey more beautiful.

True Friendship

We cannot even imagine our life without the companionship of a true friend. Just like our family members, all our friends have something to contribute, and with every new person we connect to, we become a part of the whole.

But friendships and connections aren’t just limited to humans. We can very well be friends with something that doesn’t move or talk, but is in a way more loyal than any friend, ever. Though they don’t function like a normal human but they are as important as a true friend.

Nothing to hide, I too have a non living best friend since my childhood which has had, and is still having, a great impact on my life. That non living best friend is “BOOKS”.

An Inseparable Entity

Books have always been an important part of my life. Since my childhood, I have always had this habit of carrying my books almost everywhere I went. It used to bring me a sense of freedom and happiness. Books help me escape, our often mundane reality. Books offer a spark of something so deep and fascinating, they take me into a parallel world, a dream-like space where I merge with the story and characters that are portrayed in the story.

A book is a garden, an orchard, a storehouse, a party, a company by the way, a counselor, a multitude of counselors.

Charles Baudelaire

Even today, whenever I’m tired or bored or stressed or feel like spending time with myself, I just pick up a book (printed, online or audio-book) and read it. After few minutes, I find myself into that world that I have visited a dozen times, but which feels different every time.

I’m always fond of reading fictional work. I can mostly relate to the situations or events or characters mentioned in the story with my own personal life. And it instills courage and confidence to deal with my own situation. It might act as a guiding light for someone else who’s dealing with the same.

The Best Teacher and Guide

As a student I was always enthusiastic in participating in competitions like quiz and debates, and I have always shone through. My academic records have also been great and it’s all thanks to ‘Books’. I take quite a bit of pride in all my achievements and have been praised quite a lot for my knowledge, vocabulary, communication skills, analytical skills, creativity, writing skills etc. Books made all these possible. Hadn’t it been for this divine trove of knowledge, achieving all of these would have proved impossible. Knowledge once gained, will forever stay with you and help you at every step of life.

Books are losing their place on the shelf

Physical fitness gets plenty of attention, but we have not cared as much about mental health. Mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness, and shouldn’t be neglected. Including the habit of reading books into my daily routine has strengthened my mental health. I can say safely that it has helped me a lot in being the person I am today.

However, it hurts me to see that with the new innovations and distracting modes of entertainment available, books are losing their importance. People nowadays consider it extra work to read a book, and only do so if they absolutely need to, like passing a grade or such. Books bring a realization of the values contained deep within us.

With the help of good books, one can learn moral values, ethics in life, and become a good human being. It is necessary to gain some positive values in life which reflect in our individual character.

A Myriad of experiences

It is a fact that “The whole world resides in one great book.” Books have that potential to upgrade our conviction to match our destiny. If a child gets into the habit of picking up and reading a book from an early age, they will never feel bored and more importantly, never have time for any kind of negativity, which will ultimately lead to great heights of success in life. Most of the people tend to underestimate the power of books.

Books can open up a whole new world, which is immersive and teaches you a valuable lesson. Of course like every other media, books might also contain harmful elements and therefore one has to be choosy in what they want to consume. But in comparison to other forms of work, the ill contents in books are mostly mild. But I strongly believe that no knowledge is ever wasted and the dots will connect. Every book adds to your character and helps to shape and re-shape the lives of us book-worms forever and ever.

A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies . . . The man who never reads lives only one.

George R.R. Martin

Books have been and always will be man’s best friend. They are the real treasure in everyone’s life.
