A Poem About Rape - Diksha - From The Experts Mouth (FTEM)

Editor’s Note: Why this poem about Rape?

There are some topics, discussing which are considered taboo in society and rape is certainly one of them. If society is hesitant to discuss this openly, imagine the plight of the victims or their near and dear ones. Or, even people who are moved deeply merely by the knowledge of such incidents. Here is a poem by Diksha, when she was emotionally impacted upon hearing the heartbreaking incident of a four-year-old child who was raped on her way to school early in the morning.

Rape | A Poem About Rape

It was early morning when I heard that a 4-year-old girl in my small city was raped in an educational institute. It reflects badly on the society that we live in and evades the trust in the education system and our confidence in sending the girl child out of home. This incident left a deep mark in my heart, and my hatred for those devils is reflected through my poem about rape.

Rape!! Every 30 minutes!! A new devil.
Disguised as a human with a mind full of evil,
With a different character and a different name.
A devil, a beast with no shame.

A child who is not a year yet,
Is also victim of this cruel act.
The innocent called ‘goddess of house’ screams,
For her life and for her dreams.

People say she was at the place of this kind,
But rape in the temple puts questions in my mind.
People say she was ill-timed,
But rape every 30 minutes puts questions in my mind.
People say it was the wrong clothes she donned,
But the rape of 7 months to 70-year old put questions in my mind.

Had she no rights to live her life unconfined?
Will she always be maligned???
To all the people of the society,
To all the rich and the mighty,
Can this stigma bring end to society??

Need is for a change, a change not of time, cloth, or place,
But of the mindsets of people who affect society’s grace.
Of the people who have forgotten their roles in life’s race,
So that the world can be a better place.

From The Editor’s Desk

Rape is a heinous act and has no place in a civilized society. The word “rape” carries a heavy weight of guilt and shame on the victim, her family, and the society as a whole. It is a word which gives rise to several questions. We need to all work to make our society free from this evil, and the first step is to stop blaming the victim and to discuss these topics openly, and with sensitivity. It is only through such dialogues that we can change the mindsets, as mentioned in the poem. We hope this poem will open the eyes and ears of the people of this country, and that it will trigger the mindset change – the first of many steps to eliminate this evil from society.
